Raku Firing with Ruby Tomes

Helene Shovlar

“Raku is an ancient Japanese firing technique dating back to 1580 and is derived from the Japanese word for ‘enjoyment’. Enamelled pieces are removed from the kiln at top temperature and placed into combustible material where they burn until cool. Results can be lustrous and unique.”

Many thanks to Ruby who was wonderfully well prepared and this, together with her enthusiasm, ensured that all of us in the group had not only plenty of ‘enjoyment’ but also achieved some very pleasing results.
