Mixed Media and Surface Finishes

Cumbria Group Workshop with Tilly Wilkinson 3rd February 2018

Pat Malone

The threat of snow wasn’t enough to deter eleven enamellers from meeting at Keswick for a workshop led by Tilly Wilkinson- Tilly and David had been persuaded by Jane Sheppard that a visit to the Lakes in February would be a welcome break from routine(?)- and knowing of Tilly’s expertise in the use of decorative media and interest in innovative techniques in enamelling, we had asked her to help us further explore this subject.

With such a wide-ranging subject we staggered in with bags and boxes of equipment, to be outdone by the table covered in stencils, Riso screens, punches, and samples of metal leaf, foil decals and other materials brought by Tilly and Jane for us to learn about and use. Tilly had also brought many examples of her work which illustrated the techniques she talked about and, most importantly, showed us how these could often be combined to good effect.

Typically of Tilly, she provided loads of practical tips from her own experience to help us get the best from the various materials as well as explaining what can go wrong and how to correct or try and turn our mistakes into ‘happy accidents’.
