Ideas and Notes on Colour by Veronica Matthew

Often it is only when one reads notes from past experiments that one realises how many favourite enamels are no longer made. Veronica has always loved experimenting and very kindly gave the journal a copy of many of her notes.

Here, in no particular order, are some for which the enamels are still available.

  1. Over partially oxidised copper – cover with Balls Wet Process flux, making it thick and thin in places. Dry, then fire at 780°C. It may crack where it is thick. Sift 243 Black all over and fire at 800°C. This can give a lovely texture on thick areas and a purply blue colour all over. Might be a good background for a strong opaque colour.

  2. A background of Blue Rose combined with Lavender is beautiful.
