Region 6 group met in Kingswood, Bristol for their October meeting with a demonstration of Keum-Boo and also the use of metal foils in enamels.
Harriet St. Leger showed us how to fuse gold foil onto fine silver for the Keum-Boo effect. She explained that you need to use fine silver, or sterling silver which has been depletion gilded. A flat piece of stainless steel or brass is heated on a hot plate and the silver is heated on this. It is useful to have holes punched in the metal to place any findings on the back of the silver. The shaped piece of gold foil is laid on the heated silver and rubbed firmly with a burnisher until it is fused. If the silver is not hot enough, the gold will not fuse. The piece can now be polished.
