Fun with Foil

Kathleen Kay

This is one of the playful ways that I introduced the quick manipulation of pattern on foil (shim) to the creative embroiderers who came to my Sunday Enamelling Workshops, and they loved it. It was so quick and easy to achieve curved or straight lines with a touch of three dimensional pleating, and areas of texture which show up so well under transparent enamels. We made sure that a few holes had been pierced right through the copper before enamelling so that, later at home, these wonderful creations could be stitched into place on their work. This session was obviously popular as several people booked regularly for subsequent workshops.

The technique is good for beginners, it's hands-on right away; no spending time working out a design for something they hadn't yet a clue about. Here, we are using the tools to guide lines directly onto the foil, building up the pattern as we go.
